With the year coming to a close, Sony has taken a step back to review what has happened with the PS4 in the past year. The company did admit that its next-gen console did lack in the first-party games department for 2015, but there is high hopes for 2016.

It appears that Sony had been more focused with third-party partnerships for 2015, which is the company's response for its rather weak first-party lineup, GameSpot reported. In fact, the major games that are exclusive for PS4 are only a handful, such as "The Order: 1886," "Bloodborne" and "Until Dawn."

Still, 2015 did hold a lot of hype for the expected 2016 first-party titles. Fan following for the likes of "Street Fighter V," "Uncharted 4," "Gran Turismo" and "No Man's Sky," among others have provided some sort of traction for a better gaming year in 2016.

Not to mention the development and planning stages for the content for the PlayStation VR. Still, the fact that the PS4 has been the fastest-selling console in the history of the PlayStation is to Sony's advantage. What's left for the company is to deliver more games to its fans.

Alongside the positive outlook that Sony has for the PS4 games in 2016, the company is also positive about its virtual reality component in the PlayStation VR. Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida himself is optimistic about the future of VR.

According to Yoshida, indie developers are more likely to take the initiative for creating content for virtual reality. In the long run, however, the Sony president is positive that this will also become trend for larger game developers and companies.

"Of course, we'd like to see our major triple-A publishers start working on PS VR content as well, and you have seen some efforts and demos released, especially Capcom, Sega and Square Enix," said Yoshida in an interview quoted by VR Focus.

For now, there are already a couple of companies that are hard at work on new content for the PlayStation VR.
