Facebook is launching its "Facebook at Work" app, which contains productivity tools for businesses and companies.

The new company-focused app from Facebook allows businesses to establish their own social network within their firms.

It gives a company a way to communicate between workers and employees through the social network giant's mobile app or desktop web interface, instead of the usual email, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Facebook At Work app is very similar to Facebook's default social network service. The difference is that the business-centered app has no advertisements and the Menlo Park-based firm does not save or snoop through companies' sensitive data.

In addition, professional profiles, those made inside the Facebook At Work app, will not be seen outside a company's social network, which means that employees can safely post private data without worrying that the public may see it, The Verge reported.

However, the concept of a company social network app is not new. According to Tech Crunch, the Facebook At Work app will be going head-to-head with Yammer from Microsoft, Convo, Socialcast, Slack and others.

Engineering director and head of the app development Lars Rasmussen told Tech Crunch that they launched the app for testing. The social network is currently aiming for small companies with about 100 or more employees.

Rasmussen said that there is still no clear way of how the social media firm will profit from the new app, but said that "it could be paid."

The app head also told Tech Crunch that the Facebook At Work platform was already being used by the firm's employees along with CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who posts announcements via the platform.

The Facebook At Work app will be supported by both Android and iOS platforms.
