Microsoft's Xbox One came out on top as the best-selling console in the United States during the holiday season, beating Sony's PlayStation 4 for the second time.
The Xbox One became the "best selling console in the U.S." not only during the holiday season, but also in November, beating the PlayStation 4 two months in a row, according to Xbox, Microsoft's news portal for their video game console. Microsoft based their claim according to statistics from the NPD group, an industry-tracking company.
After the Xbox One's success in November and December, Microsoft announced that it will be taking $50 off from its price tag. The Xbox One now costs $349 since Jan.16, Friday, repeating its move in November 2014 when it also slashed the console's price.
However, the PlayStation 4 still wins the title for the 2014's most sold console both in the U.S. and internationally.
Meanwhile, the overall hardware sales in 2014 saw a 20 percent increase with $5.07 billion compared to $4.24 billion in 2013, Joystiq reported.
Microsoft also announced that the Xbox One will soon have the ability for screenshot captures. An integration between the console and the Windows 10 OS on PC is also currently on the way.
On the other hand, software sales dropped by 13 percent from $6.11 billion in 13 down to $5.30 billion in 2014.
In terms of video game title sales, Activision and Square Enix's "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" took the top spot for the Physical Retail Sales of December 2014. It was followed by "Grand Theft Auto V," "Madden NFL 15," "Super Smash Bros" and "NBA 2K15" closing the top five spot.
