"Game of Thrones" director Jeremy Podeswa unveiled that the fan fury over the last installment's rape scene that involved Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) affected the approach to be taken for season 6.
Talking at a breakfast briefing at Fox Studios Australia in Sidney on Dec. 18, Podeswa who directed the controversial fifth installment episode called "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken," said that the movie creators responded to the discussion and a few things changed, according to Forbes.
Podeswa, who reportedly directed the first two episodes of season 6 added, "It is important that (the producers) not self-censor. The show depicts a brutal world where horrible things happen. They did not want to be too overly influenced by that (criticism) but they did absorb and take it in and it did influence them in a way."
George RR Martin, the author of "Game of Thrones" gave a similar statement in defense of the rape scene last June.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Martin said that the world he was creating portrays "a patriarchal society based on the Middle Ages, [and] the Middle Ages were not a time of sexual egalitarianism."
The genius behind the film further explained, "Just because you put in dragons doesn't mean you can put in anything you want ... If you're going to do [a fantasy element], it's best to only do one of them, or a few. I wanted my books to be strongly grounded in history and to show what medieval society was like, and I was also reacting to a lot of fantasy fiction."
Initially, Podeswa said that the creation team tried to shoot the rape scene with caution because they knew from the onset that it might not impress some of the viewers.
