Finally, the long wait for Sony's PlayStation VR headset is over, as the wearable device now has a release date. The Japanese tech giant has announced at the recently concluded E3 2016 event that it will launch the PlayStation VR headset on Oct. 13.
According to Sony, at launch of the PlayStation VR headset, buyers will have the option to choose from 50 games. Some of the games on offer will include industry's heavy hitters like a completely new "Resident Evil" game, in addition to the "Batman: Arkham" series, a "Star Wars: Battlefront" experience dubbed "X-Wing VR Mission" as well as a "Final Fantasy XV" experience, CNET reported.
Aside from announcing the names of some of the games that will be available at launch, Sony has also revealed some of their price tags. This notwithstanding, the focus is on the price of the PlayStation VR itself, which was revealed earlier this year.
When Sony announced early this year that the PlayStation VR headset will be available for $399, it raised a few eyebrows. This is primarily because the device has been priced much cheaper compared to other VR headsets already available in the market, for instance, the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. While the Oculus Rift is available for $599, the HTC Vive comes with a price tag of $799.
At the E3 2016 briefing, Sony announced that PlayStation VR headset will require a PlayStation 4 and a PlayStation Camera to be able to function. While the starting price is $399 for the headset alone, customers can also get a bundle with the headset, which includes two PlayStation Move controllers, a PlayStation Camera, plus the PlayStation Worlds game for $500.
It is expected that the affordable price of the PlayStation VR will encourage many more customers to purchase the device, Ecumenical News reported. Apparently, Sony has indicated that since the device is likely to be in great demand, it may not be possible for the company's supply chain to keep pace with the requirement. As a result there may be some shortage in the supply of the PlayStation VR.
