"Game of Thrones" alum Jason Momoa is set to star in historical drama "Frontier" which will premiere on Discovery Canada on Nov. 6 and on Netflix outside Canada in 2017. He plays Declan Harp, the leader of the "Black Wolf" rebel force.
"Frontier" will tell the story of the fur trade and present it as a ruthless turf war in the late 1700s involving the French, English, First Nations and the Black Wolf. Harp, a part-Irish and part-Cree trapper is caught amidst a brutal fight for control of the lucrative fur trade.
With Momoa are his co-stars Alun Armstrong ("New Tricks"), Vancouver-native Landon Liboiron ("Helock Grove") and Allan Hawco ("Republic of Doyle") who is also the drama's executive producer. "Frontier" took the studio which housed "Republic of Doyle" for six seasons as its production base.
The historical drama which is Discovery Canada's first scripted series was shot in Newfoundland, Ottawa and Nova Scotia. Since winter did not come to St. John's in January and February for "Frontier," director and executive producer John Vatcher ordered fake snow which they rolled around teepees to give them winter.
The weather did not bother Momoa, be it hot or cold. He had a fireplace in his accommodation in the jumbo trailer. He also wanted to play hockey with the crew on skates for the first time, according to The Spec.
The Hawaiian native grew up in Iowa where he played street hockey with roller hockey. He loves skating and can stickhandle.
The 37-year-old actor was the first choice of executive producers Brad Peyton and Rob and Peter Blackie. He was excited on "Frontier" and showed the executive producers he had many things in common with his character by inviting them to his house.
Momoa's house has a wolf's lair, seemingly furnished by an original fur trapper from Hudson's Bay. There were knives, swords and fur-covered clothing. Momoa and wife Lisa Bonet have two children, and their eight-year-old son's middle name is "Wolf."
Momoa thinks his character is phenomenal. Just like any family man, he would not like it when someone does something to his family.
"I don't even like talking about it," Momoa told ET Canada about Harp. "What would you do? It may start out violent."
After playing warlord Khal Drogo in "Game of Thrones" Season 1 and 2, the six-feet-four actor headlined in other action adventures, such as "Conan the Barbarian" reboot and DC's "Justice League." He will soon take the titular role on an "Aquaman" spinoff.
