"Orange is the New Black" has gained popularity ever since it first premiered on Netflix. The show tackled some interesting storylines, and new characters staying at Litchfield Prison became highly relatable. Unfortunately, the series, which is about to release its fifth season, has also received tons of criticisms.
One publication came up with a list of 25 TV shows that viewers should watch without their children, and "Orange is the New Black" landed on the 13th spot. Originally, the series was just supposed to depict the events that took place in Piper Kerman's book, "Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison." However, due to its popularity, the show got extended year after year.
Meanwhile, "Orange is the New Black" Season 5 is expected to return to its roots and focus its storylines more on lead characters Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) and Alex Vause (Laura Prepon). In Season 4, the creators of the original series decided to focus on the other lesser-known characters, but this effort did not pay off.
To make things worse, "Orange is the New Black" Season 4 ended with the shocking death of one of TV's most loved characters, Poussey (Samira Wiley). Following her death, Wiley spoke with Variety to reveal that she had known her character will be killed off at the end of Season 4.
Despite already knowing Poussey's fate, Wiley understands that none of her fans could have prepared for the tragic way her character passed on. Talking about Poussey's death, Wiley said that it was definitely not thoughtless even though it is senseless. "It echoes so many deaths that have happened in the last year, even. Eric Garner. Mike Brown. This happens in real life, and people are so upset," she said.
Wiley added that one of the goals for Poussey's death was to start a conversation among viewers and that's exactly what happened. Even after a few weeks since the finale for Season 4 aired, fans were still clamoring for the return of the character.
"Orange is the New Black" Season 5 will be released on Netflix on June 17.
