tvN's "Goblin," also known "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God," continue to rule in viewership ratings. The 10th episode of the fantasy drama drew monster viewership last Dec. 31, 2016, breaking the previous record posted by the crime drama "Signal."
The 10th episode of the tvN drama, which revealed the shocking connection between Kim Shin (Gong Yoo), the Grim Reaper (Lee Dong-Wook) and Sunny (Yoo In-Na), recorded a national viewership rating of 14.55 percent, according to Nielsen Korea. The number was good enough to make "Goblin" the second-highest rated show in the cable television history.
"Goblin" beat out the record previously held by "Signal," while Park Bo-Gum starrer "Reply 1988" maintained its lead with a rating of 18.8 percent. Given the fantasy drama's high ratings, many believed that it will soon break the record posted by "Reply 1988."
Due to its tremendous popularity, "Goblin" is the latest South Korean drama series to be aired in Japan. It will begin airing on Mnet Japan at some point in March.
The tvN drama captured the heart of many South Korean drama lovers across the globe due to its refreshing storyline and the heartwarming bromance between the amnesiac grim reaper and the immortal goblin. Many also praised the show's electrifying cinematography, noting that each episode is done in a way that will give viewers a movie vibe.
"Goblin" is the latest project by Kim Eun-Sook, the acclaimed screenwriter behind the mega-hit TV series "The Heirs" and "Descendants of the Sun." At the drama's press conference in November 2016, Kim said she dig through historical documents and spiced them up with imagination to create the fantasy series.
"Not much research has been done on dokkaebi (Korean goblins), so there was a lot of room for storytelling," The Star quoted Kim as saying before a group of the predominantly Korean crowd.
