Former Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies has confirmed that they are launching a new video game studio. The new unnamed studio is launching an open-world game dubbed as "Everywhere" which it claims is not as similar to the popular "Grand Theft Auto V."
Rockstar has struck gold with its "GTA" video game franchise that sells millions for each game they released in the past decade or so. The open-world game mechanic has been adopted by many popular franchises as well such as "Mafia" and "Saints Row."
Now, Benzies' new studio will also make another similar game. He told Venture Beat that the new studio will be making the "Everywhere" open-world game along with other former "GTA V" leads Matthew Smith and Colin Entwistle. The genre of the game has not been confirmed yet but open-world games usually end up being violent.
"Players are getting smarter and require more from their games, and we want players to have the real freedom to live in our worlds in the ways they want to," Benzie said. " We're aiming to offer a huge variety of game modes and styles that not only tell our stories but also enable players to live in the identities and adventures they most want to explore."
Benzies' studio now already has about 30 people and it is still hiring new ones in order to develop the "Everywhere" game that is expected to beat "GTA V," Game Spot reported. The game engine that the studio will use is Amazon's Lumberyard which is free to use and is open-source. Lumberyard looks highly similar to the also-free Unity game engine.
Rockstar and parent company Take-Two are still legally battling Benzies as the latter is suing the former for $150 million in royalties. There is still no ruling in the case.
"GTA V" continues to sell even years after its original release. "Everywhere" still has no release date and seems to be in the early stages of development.
