"Rick and Morty" creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland shared what goes on inside the writers room of the hit Adult Swim animated series. The two also revealed some major spoilers for the third season.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Harmon said that they were deeply inspired by sci-fi and pop culture. He explained that they were relaxed coming up with stories for the second season as they have decided to forego the rules they came up with for the first one.
Harmon said that they came up with a lot of stories that revolves around Jerry's domestic life, like getting a credit card and going over his limit, but it just did not seem to work.
"We're sci-fi nerds, we've learned to interact with and think about humanity through pop cultural tropes, so it really is more passionate and personal for us to do stories that are inspired by sci-fi," he explained.
Harmon also shared that they would often go do an episode by "following the laughter." He said that they tend to think what it was like to be a 14-year-old, think of their favorite sci-fi movies and go from there.
In other news, Movie Pilot earlier speculated that viewers will finally get to see Rick and Morty travel to the Dog World. Given that Harmon was quoted earlier saying that he wanted to take more risks with the show, the outlet speculated that the third season is the time where the creators will try experimenting. Given that the series' theme show came from the unaired pilot, it is not a stretch to think that we may see the worlds clash sooner or later.
"Rick and Morty" season 3 airs early 2016.
