The list, which was published by the Times Higher Education on Thursday, showed that the University of Hong Kong grabbed the third spot while the University of Macao placed sixth.

The 2016 edition of the World's Most International Universities listed 200 universities from 28 countries. In selecting the institutions, the Times Higher Education utilized indicators such as the number of international students, research papers published with at least one co-author from another country of each university, and the proportion of international staff.

"An institution's global outlook is one of the key markers of a prestigious university," Phil Baty, editor of Times Higher Education, said.

"The top institutions hire faculty from all over the world, attract students from a global market of top talent and collaborate with leading departments wherever they happen to be based," he added.

This year saw a historic feat, as for the first time, a Middle Eastern university topped the list. The roster named Qatar University as the world's most international institution for 2016.

The remaining slots in the top 10 were occupied by the University of Luxembourg (2nd), Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (4th), ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (7th), University of St. Gallen (8th), National University of Singapore (9th) and Imperial College London (10th).

Moreover, the survey showed that London, with 15 among the top 200, had the most number of the world's international universities. Aside from the Imperial College London, these include, among others, the University College London (18th), King's College London (20th), London School of Economics and Political Science (22nd), Queen Mary University of London (23rd), and Royal Holloway, University of London (30th).

"All institutions in this list deserve to celebrate--being named one of the most international universities in the world is a sign of great potential, competitiveness and dynamism," Baty said.
