SteamVR games can now be played in the Oculus Rift, even though there is an Oculus store for the virtual reality headset. Directions for bypassing the store were revealed by its own support page.
Oculus's own official support page has the directions on how to let their customers purchase and play SteamVR games on Rift. The popular virtual reality headset that is currently supported by Facebook can support VR games from other platforms and that includes the ones from Steam.
The Steam platform and its VR games will be named as unknown sources by the Oculus platform. To make the device download from the user's Steam platform, the user must allow it to bypass the Oculus store and activate the Steam platform and its games in it for easy access.
First, the user should start up the Oculus App on the computer and select the gear icon on the upper right. The user must then choose the Settings option afterwards.
Next, the user should choose the General option on the left and locate the Unknown Sources section. Toggle the button so that it can appear as checked to turn on the feature which activates the user's SteamVR games and gain access to the Steam store and library. This will make the Rift VR headset support the SteamVR games that the user owns now.
With this option, Rift owners can easily access the Steam platform through the headset by launching the games straight to it. The developers from Rift that sell their games on the PC platform can always request codes from Oculus, so that their games can be accessed through the PC store. This means fans will be expecting more Steam games with VR technology soon.
According to Venture Beat, customers who paid to back up the Kickstarter project and who pre-ordered early will be expecting the virtual reality headset from Oculus very soon. The device has 30 games now, which can all be purchased through the Oculus Store and other platforms like Steam.
In other news, HTC Vive will be coming in April which can also support the Steam platform. To let users experience room-scale VR, the VR headset will come with two wireless controllers and the Lighthouse sensors. The whole set has a price of $800.
