Rumors abound that the much-anticipated book "Winds of Winter" may be sacrificed for a spin-off series based on "Game of Thrones."

Author George R. R. Martin revealed in an interview to Entertainment Weekly that there could be a followup to "GoT," in case the channel partner HBO is interested. He said that he already has a lot of material ready and HBO could just adapt it into a TV script. His "Dunk & Egg" stories are set in the same era, as the "A Song Of Ice And Fire" and could easily be adapted as the new spinoff series.

The "Dunk & Egg" stories are set almost a century before the Daenerys and the Tyrion era. Martin's statement about a spinoff series led to speculations that he is no longer interested in finishing "Winds of Winter" and instead is focused on the new series.

With the countdown is in full force for the release of "Game of Thrones" Season 6, "Winds of Winter" is still facing a huge delay. On top of this, HBO recently confirmed that Jon Snow is really dead, which has lifted the mystery of the book's potential plot. Moreover, the story, which will be shown in the upcoming season will take a different path than the book. This will happen for the very first time.

Martin is yet to set a date for the release of the sixth book in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. He confirmed on his journal, Not A Blog, that the book is far from ready. It was earlier speculated that the book will arrive in March, a month before the next season hits the screens.

Martin has time and again said that he is trying his level best to deliver the book, as early as possible. The delay was caused due to him being over-burdened with prior commitments, which he has cancelled so far.

The author is not totally devoting time to complete the book. He is currently busy supporting Bookworm, which is a fund-raising drive to fight cancer. He donated full boxes of his books to this event and he supports it passionately.
