"Tokyo Ghoul" Season 3 is imminent and latest rumors point towards a 2017 release date. Reportedly, the main reason behind FUNimation delaying the airdate for "Tokyo Ghoul" Season 3 is the lack of source material.
In the anime series, the dedication of the anime iteration to the manga source depends on the level of satisfaction of avid fans and the rating of the movie. It is likely that "Tokyo Ghoul" Season 3 will be scheduled to air this year, but the producer has to change the storyline from the manga to create a different one instead. In case such a thing happens, it is believed that fans may be disappointed with the show, something that may greatly affect its ratings.
With regard to the plot for the anime, it is said that Touka Kirishima will be the new lead in the upcoming installment, according to BREATHE Cast. The character has a critical role in the original manga, and he has been strongly portrayed as Ken's training associate in the anime series. However, there are speculations that the story is slated to shift with Kirishima as the main character, since Ken's narrative arc turned out to be a disappointment for fans and viewers.
Production for the much-awaited third installment is yet to commence. As a result, a 2017 release is more rational in order to create a more solid and coherent plot.
Meanwhile, avid fans of the anime series petitioned to change the show's animation studio. In a petition titled "Reboot the Tokyo Ghoul anime with a different animation studio," many fans gave their perspective and supported the petition, according to Change. During the petition, many believed that several characters were absent; thus, they requested for a reboot of Season 2.
However, the petition was closed with 266 supporters and was never discussed again. Later, many critics believed that the reason behind the petition was that "Tokyo Ghoul" Season 3 might end up like Season 2.
CEO and president of FUNimation Entertainment, Gen Fukunaga, said that the third installment would air this year. However, based on the lack of source materials, fans of the anime series might have to wait until 2017 to lay hands on Season 3.
