There are various speculations as to why the series got cancelled, and one of the biggest reasons, according to reports, is that the series performed poorly in terms of getting enough ratings. Reports also cited that ABC was severely criticized after firing one of the show's stars, Stana Katic, and a longtime member of the cast, Tamala Jones, News Everyday has learned.

The same publication also reported that the network's Entertainment Group President, Channing Dungey, said that although both "Castle" and "Nashville" performed well for a longtime in the network, they do not consider these shows to be the network's future.

On the other hand, the executive producers of the series, Alexi Hawley and Terrence Winter, released a statement in regards to the show's cancellation. The showrunners said that they are still trying to process the emotions ignited by the cancellation, and that they are proud of the show.

Hawley and Winter also thanked the loyal fans of "Castle," and said that the series would have not been able to go this far if it were not for the support of the fans. The showrunners emphasized that the fans were the reason why the series reached its eight season, equivalent to a total of one hundred and seventy three episodes. The two also gave their thanks and appreciation to the cast and crew of the series, saying that they were a family to them and they will certainly miss their "Castle" family.
