Apple may be departing from their traditional IPS display as the iPhone 8 is reportedly being developed with a Super AMOLED display from Samsung plus a curved edge screen similar to the Galaxy series.
With the iPhone 7 shaping up to be a boring disappointment of a phone, many are already expecting the iPhone 8 to knock their socks off. One of the specs that stand out is the curved edge Super AMOLED display and better storage options.
Samsung and the Cupertino-based tech company seem to be striking up a deal for the former to provide OLED panels for Apple. It has been long speculated that Apple is planning to use OLED displays for their products starting in 2017, which is when the new iPhone is expected to be launched.
Market research director Kevin Wang from IHS Technology said that one source believes the iPhone 7 in 2017 is expected to have dual curved displays on both sides, Ubergizmo has learned. It would then be similar to the Galaxy Note 7 Edge that is also rumored to make an appearance soon from Samsung.
While it is not exactly an innovation, the move from the IPS display is still a move forward. OLED displays are known to be brighter and more power efficient because the black parts on the screen are not lit up, saving power in increments.
There is also a new patent from Apple that would allow the screen itself to read the fingerprints from taps, Forbes reported. TouchID would then be more advanced on the iPhone 8 compared to the iPhone 7.
The new smartphone's chip is also expected to be manufactured by TSMC through a 10nm process. It would certainly be smaller than the AMD Polaris which uses the 14nm FinFET process for their Radeon RX 480 video card.
Apple is only expected to reveal the iPhone 8 next year at their WWDC 2017 event. The smartphone could then be seen sporting a Super AMOLED display with dual curved edges on both side plus the new TouchID sensors on the screens for faster reading of the user's fingerprints when unlocking the device or authorizing a transaction.
