Producer Masachika Kawata and director Koushi Nakanishi answered some questions during their interview with IGN, to clear up some misunderstandings with the new sequel. They confirmed that this new game is not a reboot, but a sequel that is set six years after what happened in the sixth game of the franchise. It was also confirmed that the herb, a crucial health item of the game franchise, will be coming back to this sequel, and it will have the same purpose.

To create this new game, the game developers were inspired with the first game of the franchise, and classic American horror movies. They also took heart the criticism they got with the sixth iteration of the game franchise, and they will not make the same mistake with this new sequel, said Kawata. He added that mystery was the main feature of the game and it was crucial to maintain it throughout the story, and they want the players to feel unnerved with this new game.

Nakanishi also revealed that there will be fewer enemies to fight in this game, but each of these will pose a significant threat against the player. They want to make the threat more personal and intimate for players to experience in the game.

Kawata also cleared up the misconception that the game is pure VR, which is not. Players will have the option of playing the game in first person view, but if they want a more atmospheric experience, he recommended the VR option since it will make the game scarier. He even joked that if the VR experience was too scary, players will just have to close their eyes inside the PlayStation VR headset.
