In 2015, Google updated the guarantee for its Nexus devices amidst Stage Fright vulnerability. Now the tech giant has gone a little further to list the estimated end-of-life (EOL) dates for its Nexus devices on the Google support site.
The EOL data were added by the company on its official support site sometime in the third week of June. However, the data was not notice until recently. Although the users are already aware of the approximate length of support that the company offers for its Nexus devices, having the key details listed on the support site is particularly helpful.
Google provides security updates for the Nexus devices for three years from release or 18 months from its dispatch from the Google store, whichever is longer. For example, Google stopped selling Nexus 9 in April 2016. However, the phone should keep getting Android updates until October 2017, which falls exactly after 18 months.
Most people are concerned about the updates regarding the upgrade of the device to the new version of the Android. Such upgrades are generally available for at least two years from release date.
According to the Google support site, the EOL date for Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P is September 2017, Nexus 9 is October 2016, Nexus 5 is October 2015, Nexus 7 is July 2015 and Nexus 10 is November 2014. That is, no guaranteed Android version updates will be provides to the devices after the aforementioned timeline.
The listing mentioned on the support site further says that "all partners have committed to giving software updates for at least 18 months after the phone's launch. All Android One phones will get at least one major software update and several smaller security updates."
Nexus 4, which is already quite long past the EOL is not listed on the website. In addition, Nexus 6 has also not been listed. May be the date of decay for this device has not been decided yet, but it is speculated that Nexus 6 might be coming up on its EOL in the fall of 2016, according to GSM Arena.
