Speculations that "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 will bring back Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) onscreen has been making the rounds on the internet for quite some time now. New details have surfaced that Dobrev may be reuniting with her ex boyfriend Ian Somerhalder on The CW vampire drama not as Elena, but as a new mysterious villain character.

After hearing Elena's voice in the season 7 finale, fans of the actress could not wait to see her back again on the television series. As to whether Elena will be back or not in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8, executive producer Julie Plec revealed that Elena's character will return during the series' finale as what Dobrev had promised.

"It's what she and I kind of agreed on when she decided to move on, and it's what I've got in my head," Plec told TV Line. "Obviously things can change throughout time, if the show goes on longer than we expect it to, or if we all collectively decide it would be fun to bring her back earlier, and she wanted to.

With Plec revelations, it seemed that there is a high possibility that Dobrev will be returning in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 if the upcoming season will be the final run for the series. The executive producer also confirmed to the publication that he is sticking with his plan and that is to bring her character back in the end.

The series will have a Season 8 panel at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, and there is a growing speculation that Dobrev may be appearing at the event for the first time since she was last seen in Season 6. If the rumors are true, then Elena and Damon Salvatore (Somerhalder) will be seen together after a long time.

Fans could expect a lot of spoilers for the "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 and a question and answer round at the event. It is not certain yet who among the entire cast will be showing up, but the main cast, Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Candice Accola-King, Zach Roerig and Katarina Graham may be present at the Comic-Con.

Whether or not Season 8 will be the series' last, Somerhalder declined to give his confirmation on the news. During the Nashville's Walker Stalker Con in April, the actor indirectly addressed the rumors that the next season will be the final season for the series.

"We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice," E! News quoted Somerhalder as saying. His statement came after  Kat Graham confirmed that "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 will be her final season.

Season 8 will return on Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. on The CW.  Dobrev has not given any comment yet regarding her speculated return in the series.
