Even after "Penny Dreadful" drew the curtains, fans are still hoping for a fourth season or a spinoff. However, the series creator has explained that the story is already finished.
"Penny Dreadful" aired its final episode titled "The Blessed Dark" in June. The final seconds of the show had the words "The End," which left is followers stunned. It was indeed the last episode for the horror fantasy and there will be season 4, according to E! Online.
Moreover, series creator John Logan has explained in a special video that the Showtime program was intended to run for only three years. This means the story is considered a done deal and Eva Green's Vanessa Ives will not be suffering anymore.
Despite the fact that the show will not return for a fourth season, Showtime president David Nevins has publicly commended the cast and Logan. Nevins said, "John Logan deftly created a truly beautiful, brilliantly-written, epic drama series that has drawn a passionate fanbase to our network."
Meanwhile, some fans may still find it hard to let go of the series. Logan's interview with TVLine hinted that there may have been a few people who took Ferdinand Lyle's (Simon Russell Beale) departure for Egypt a sign of a spinoff. Others may have thought that there will be another season without Vanessa.
The interview also sought to clarify that Lyle's trip was not meant to introduce mummy story arcs for a potential season four. To address those assumptions Logan laughed it off and explained that the trip was intended for Lyle to have a fitting ending.
Moreover, Even with Catriona being views as Vanessa's successor, Logan was positive that the "Penny Dreadful" story simply had to end with Greene's Vanessa. Furthermore, Logan explained that all the characters were meant to end in a "place of appropriate and beautiful stasis."
Thus, Dorian Grey (Reeve Carney) was seen staring at his beloved portrait and Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) finds a family with Ethan (Josh Hartnett) and vice versa. More so, the Creature also was given a fitting closure with him realizing where he truly belongs.
The bottom line for the series creator is that Vanessa's story has ended the way it should. The character's suffering had to end at that point. He aslo added extending her story beyond season 3 "would've been an act of bad faith."
