"Life begins at 40" is the usual cliche often heard by many. However, society's perception of life after 40 does not seem to be a positive one these days, as research on aging and its findings paint a picture of lower self-esteem, decline in functions, and decrease in muscle mass.

The Globe and Mail states that this view comes after research has found out that negative mood is a result from feeling older, especially in some youth-oriented cultures like the United States and Canada.

But there are several ways to regain the positive vibes despite the age. There are also various steps to take to achieve better health at 40 and beyond.

Work-Out for Lower Back

Lower backpain can be a killer, especialy at this stage. Prevent its occurence by doing some core-endurance exercises a week.

Train for Strength Per Week

Workouts can improve protein synthesis rates, making it essential for the body. Three strength-training exercises a week are enough to improve muscle gains.

Protein-Rich Meals Daily

The protein intake recommendation for both adult men and women is 1.25 grams per kilogram of body weight. For those active in the gym and approaching 40, the numbers must be increased. Intake of high-quality protein like lean meats, fish, chicken, legumes, among others, is highly recommended for every meal.

More Hours of Sleep

For most adults, the recommended hours of sleep is seven to nine hours. However, only a few achieve that because of certain activities that we do at night. Lack of sleep can actually lead to high blood pressure, signs of insulin resistance, and many other health issues, according to a Harvard Health Watch article. Adding extra hours of sleep can help prevent these occurences.

Livestrong also shares insights on how you can take care of your health, which only goes to show that everyone must do so, as it is a crucial part of life. So if you are approaching 40, there is definitely nothing to worry about if you are ready and healthy.
