The Denver Broncos could still end up with Tony Romo assuming he becomes a free agent in the offseason. The 36-year-old veteran owns a massive contract and this is something owner John Elway is not ready to absorb.

In 2017 alone, Tony Romo will be due $24.7 million. From there, he has three non-guaranteed years on his contract which are also massive. At his age and the frequency of injuries, Romo is not exactly the kind of player a team would wisely invest in at this point.

With those in mind, it comes to no surprise that the Denver Broncos have no plans to trade for tony Romo. But that doesn’t mean that seeing him land in Denver has been doused. All that will depend on what the Dallas Cowboys do this offseason.

Tony Romo found himself dispensable when rookie Dak Prescott shined in the 2016-17 NFL season. The veteran quarterback found himself relegated to backup duty, an expensive one at that. With his huge contract, there are speculations that team owner Jerry Jones will eventually trade or discuss a restructured deal with the 36-year-old player. The worst case scenario is a contract buy-out which is what the Broncos are likely waiting for.

The Broncos will only come into the picture once Tony Romo is released to the free-agent market. That would give Elway and company the freedom to negotiate a reduced but more reasonable contract, 9News reported.

Given that Romo is not exactly sturdy with his series of injuries, the apprehension on the side of the Broncos is understandable. It would not be surprising if the numbers on the planned contract would be lower and for a shorter period, Broncos Wire reported.

The Broncos have proven they can succeed even with older players. Proof of that was Peyton Manning who helped in their Super Bowl 50 triumph. With a couple of playing years more, Romo could follow in Manning’s footsteps.

Aside from calling the plays, Romo may be called upon to mentor the young quarterbacks like Trever SIemian and Paxton Lynch. There are many ways Romo can revive his career but a lot of that depends on what transpires when the NFL hits their annual break.
