"South Park" co-creator Trey Parker has recently shared how the hit adult animated sitcom of Comedy Central started.
In an Entertainment Weekly oral history, Parker said he and his "South Park" co-creator Matt Stone were at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1992. While spending weekends on set in the film school, the two "would always end up either running cameras or running sound."
According to Parker, the shoots were so boring that they would "just sit there doing voices for each other.
"That's where it actually started," Parker said about the beginning of his collaboration with Stone. "We would always talk like these little kids and make each other laugh. So we had a year of doing little skits with the voices before we shot anything."
In 1993, Parker and Stone moved to Los Angeles, where they met Fox executive Brian Graden at a screening of their indie film "Cannibal! The Musical." Since then, the three started collaborating on several projects.
"MTV turned us down. Fox had no interest in it. Others turned us down," Graden revealed. However, the then Comedy Central president Debbie Libling thought Parker and Stone's films were the funniest thing that she ever saw.
In 1997, "South Park" debuted with high ratings and went on to become the most long-lasting scripted hit of Comedy Central.
Parker and Stone developed "South Park" from their animated short films "Jesus vs. Frosty," created in 1992, and "Jesus vs. Santa," created in 1992. Collectively, the two films are called "The Spirit Of Christmas."
Meanwhile, the musical "The Book Of Mormon" by Parker, Stone and Robert Lopez is currently on a national tour. Its original Broadway cast recording is available on Ghostlight Records, according to Broadway World.
