An American soldier was shot dead and two more were injured after an Afghan soldier opened fired on a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) security team.

According to MSNBC, the shooting happened in the eastern part of the country specifically Jalalabad, Afghanistan. The encounter happened after an unidentified US Diplomat left NATO's Camp Gamberi to meet with the governor of the province.

The Afghan soldier that was supposedly an ally to the United States opened fire on the security team leaving one dead and at least two injured.

The Christian Science Monitor also reported that the Afghan soldier who opened fire was killed and the motive is yet to be determined. The casualty remains to be unidentified as well as the status of the injured soldiers.

Afghan soldiers were also wounded in the said exchange and the police officials of Afghanistan are questioning why the Afghan soldier started to shoot.

The U.S. Embassy stationed in Kabul released a statement shortly saying that they are aware of the gunfire exchange and said that the American soldiers involved were from the Resolute Support service members.

According to the publication, the angle that it was an inside attack is being looked into but officials pointed out that such attacks are not that frequent anymore since last year.

Also, foreign security forces started to be dismissed from the country last year and the NATO troops left on the ground are there only to train Afghan security forces.

This is not the first incident that happened this year because last January, three U.S. military contractors were killed by another Afghan soldier in the capital of the country. The Taliban extremists are being blamed regarding the latest attack as they claimed in the past that they are responsible for the insider attacks.
