Thousands of "Grey's Anatomy" fans have already recovered from the sudden death of Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) last season. However, it seems that show creator Shonda Rhimes is regretting her decision to kill off one of the series' most loved characters.

Following last season's finale episode, Rhimes released a statement to say her last goodbye to Dempsey, who happens to share the same birthday with her. She said, "Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character for Meredith, for me and the fans."

At one point, Rhimes admitted that she never really expected to say goodbye to Derek on "Grey's Anatomy" this very early on, especially since the series has already been confirmed for another season, KDrama Stars reported.

Following his exit, ABC released an official statement explaining why Dempsey was released from "Grey's Anatomy" and said that the actor will be pursuing other things at the moment.

Meanwhile, there have been reports that Dr. Izzie (Katherine Heigl) could reprise her role on the ABC series.

According to Unreality TV, there is a huge possibility that Heigl will return especially since she was not killed off in season 8. At that time, fans were surprised to see her go amidst rumors that she has become difficult to work with.

In a previous interview, Heigl also expressed her desire to return to "Grey's Anatomy" as long as there is still a place or a good storyline for Izzie. According to the actress, her fans want to know what happened to Izzie and whether or not she has become successful wherever she is now.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 will premiere this September on ABC.
