General Motors recently announced that Android and iOS features will finally make their way in the car company's upcoming 2016 models. The announcement added that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be integrated in 14 different Chevrolet models.
The tech upgrade from Chevy will make use of the new 7-inch MyLink infotaiment screen situated on the car's dashboard. Additionally, the 8-inch MyLink screens will support Apple CarPlay within the first quarter of 2016 and Android Auto will subsequently follow.
"For most of us, our smartphones are essential. Partnering with Apple and Google to offer CarPlay and Android compatibility across the widest range of models in the industry is a great example of how Chevrolet continues to democratize technology that's important to our customer," General Motors CEO Mary Barra said
The 7-inch MyLink screen will be released on the 2016 models of Cruze, Spark, Malibu, the coupe and convertible version of Camaro as well as the light and heavy duty models of Silverado. The 8-inch MyLink screen will be available on all the previously mentioned car models with the addition of the Suburban and Tahoe.
According to NBC News, CarPlay and Android Auto will be added to the next-generation hybrid car Chevrolet Volt plug-in. The company confirmed this but did not provide a timeline for its release.
One the integration is done in the United States, international markets including Canada, Brazil and Mexico will soon follow, according to TopSpeed.
Chevy will be the first American car company to integrate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the other hand, Hyundai announced that its 2015 Hyundai Sonata with Android Auto feature is already in the assembly line and will be released on the market before the end of 2015.
