With Roland Emmerich's "Independence Day: Resurgence" set to hit theaters next year, the director has revealed why his A-list actor Will Smith is not returning to the film.

Emmerich told Cinema Blend that Smith was "tired" of sequels and did another science fiction movie, M. Night Shyamalan's "After Earth," which followed a father and his son who got stranded on Earth following the events that enforced humanity to escape.

The director also mentioned that he wanted to work with the "Suicide Squad" actor in the very beginning and Smith himself was very eager to be in the "Independence Day" sequel. However, the director's desire will not take place at this point.

While Smith is not going to return in Emmerich's upcoming "Independence Day: Resurgent," the director said that they will move the film forward in a "very respectful way," with Smith's character still a part of the plot. Smith will be next seen as villain Deadshot in David Ayer's "Suicide Squad.

Meanwhile, "Jurassic Park" star Jeff Goldblum talked about his character's role in the upcoming film. The actor will reprise his role as the head of the Earth Space Defence. Goldblum told Mirror that his character is responsible for keeping the safety of Earth's inhabitants while working with other forces in sending back the aliens from where they came from.

The upcoming "Independence Day: Resurgence" chronicles another global dilemma as a new batch of aliens strikes again the planet. Also, the much anticipated film sequel will involve its action-packed sequences, which will feature both old and new characters in the story.

Emmerich's "Independence Day: Resurgence" is slated to premiere on June 24, 2016 while David Ayer's "Suicide Squad" is set to hit theaters on Aug. 5, 2016.
