Tom Cruise is likely to reprise his role of Maverick in the recently announced sequel of 1986 hit flick "Top Gun." The news has been confirmed by SkyDance CEO David Ellison saying that "Top Gun 2," which is still under development, will surely have its lead character Maverick.

"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no "Top Gun" without Maverick , and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," said Ellison in a public statement, clearly hinting that the 52-year-old "Mission Impossible" actor is set to reprise his role of  the badass fighter pilot in the upcoming sequel, Collider reported. The release date of the movie is not yet confirmed.

Ellison further informed at a press event for his latest movie, "Terminator Genisys," that the "Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chin-Li" writer, Justin Marks, is right now developing the script, which is likely to incorporate the idea of warfare using drone technology and fifth generation fighters.

The movie is also likely to explore the aerial warfare and will question the requirement of pilots in this era of unmanned fighters and extensive drone usage. Cruise's character Maverick will focus that the pilots are not obsolete and they are here to stay despite the technological advancements.

The possibility of the sequel has been rumored since 2000 and this is the first official confirmation which has come in reference to the much awaited sequel. The movie is likely to be in 3D and IMAX.

The sequel will be shot practically, with the minimal usage of graphics and computer effects. The attempt to develop "Top Gun 2" is reportedly ongoing since 2010, but was halted due to the demise of "Top Gun" director Tony Scott in 2012. The screenwriting duties have also been passed among different writes including Peter Craig and Christopher McQuaire before landing with Marks, IGN reported.
