Local film and newcomer “Monk Comes Down the Mountain” secured the number one spot in the Chinese box-office ranking this week.
Chen Kaige's martial arts movie knocked "Hollywood Adventures" to third spot, from being on the top of blockbuster films last weekend.
"Hollywood Adventures," a Beijing Enlight Pictures film, ended up with a total gross of $46.65 million in the previous week.
In its first four days of showing, "Monk Comes Down the Mountain," a 3D IMAX martial arts epic, grossed $37.28 million.
According to data from Entgroup, “Monk” got 176,191 screenings and 5.83 million attendances.
The "Monk" deals with the story of a Taoist monk with kung fu skills who leaves an isolated mountain for the city in the 1920s.
In the city, the monk becomes involved in conspiracies and encounters a series of strange characters.
The film was based on a well-known series of novels by Xu Haofeng.
Wang Baoqiang stars in the film together with Aaron Kwok, Chang Chen and Lin Chi-ling.
"Monk Comes Down the Mountain" is now Chen’s most successful work to date, as it has surpassed his 2010 movie “Sacrifice” ($29.9 million).
With regard to the foreign films, "Jurassic World" by Universal Pictures has slid down from being on the second place last weekend, but it holds strong in its fourth and final weekend. The Hollywood film’s license will expire on Thursday.
"Jurassic World’s" exit in Chinese theaters prevents it from surpassing "Avengers: Age of Ultron," the third highest-grossing film of all time in China ($235 million).
"Jurassic" gets a total gross of $221 million so far, down 40 percent this week.
