Meanwhile, Season 3 Episode 2 "Purpose in the Machine" saw Dr. Andrew Garner evaluate Joey Gutierrez and said that he was not yet prepared to join the Secret Warriors, Johnson's team of Inhumans, as per Comic Book. In an attempt to re-establish Hydra, Ward recruited Werner von Strucker, the son of the previous leader, and sent him to Garner's psychology class.

Hunter saw Melinda May, Garner's ex-wife, while he was searching for Ward. While she was facing some hardships in her relationships with Garner and Coulson, May agreed to join Hunter in the mission. Leo Fitz realized that the Kree monolith was a portal and the team asked help from the Asgardian Elliot Randolph.

Randolph took the team to an ancient castle, along with a machine that can open the monolith using vibrations. Though the portal harmed her physically, Johnson used her abilities to copy the machine. Fitz entered the portal and found Jemma Simmons. The team managed to have Simmons back while Johnson destroyed the monolith.
