A guitar stolen in the 1960s from John Lennon, the late co-founder of the band The Beatles, was sold at an auction for $2.41 million in California on Nov. 7, Saturday. Along with this was a drum head of The Beatles sold for $2.1 million.
In the late 1960s, John McCaw bought the 1962 J-160E Gibson acoustic guitar and for decades, he had no idea that the guitar was Lennon's guitar stolen Lennon at a Christmas concert in December 1963.
The authenticity of the guitar was verified through several things such as its matching serial number and wood grain. The one who bought it for $2.41 million at the auction in California has requested to remain anonymous.
"It's such an important part of Lennon's career and Beatles history," NBC News quoted auctioneer Darren Julien as saying. "I knew it would go over $1 million. I had no idea it would go over $2 million."
Half of the proceeds from the sale of Lennon's stolen guitar will go toward the Spirit Foundation, a charitable organization created by Lennon and his widow, Yoko Ono.
In other news, Ono is collaborating with The Flaming Lips again for a Christmas vinyl version of Lennon and Ono's "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)." It will be released on Dec. 11 on Chimera Music, according to NME. Prior to this, Ono and The Flaming Lips also teamed up in 2011.
Among The Beatles members, only Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney are still alive. George Harrison died in 2001, almost 11 years after Lennon's death.
