"I personally think everyone thought it was going to be a huge departure after Elena was gone. And I was one of those people. I thought it was going to be a huge departure for the typical formula of our show. By virtue of the fact that it wasn't a huge leap for mankind, as far as changing it up, there were some differences that sort of mixed up the formula," he said.

Meanwhile, Somerhalder also revealed that there will be at least one episode this season that will focus mainly on his character Damon Salvatore.

In episode 10, Damon will have an interesting storyline that Somerhalder believes will excite fans.

"It was the first time since early on in season one when it was just creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec staying up till four in the morning writing that I said, 'Wow, this episode is being so well-executed that it's worthy of being submitted for things because it's just on point,'" he said.

In other news, "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will also reveal new details about Caroline's relationship with Alaric.

Fans will also find out whether or not Valerie and Stefan will get back together or not.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
