J.J. Abrams' space sci-fi film "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" performed well at the box office.

Following its release on Dec. 18 in 4,134 theaters, Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" grossed an estmated $248 million in the United States and $281 million in other countries, for an estimated total of $529 million on a global scale, according to Box Office Mojo. The film managed to beat ColinTrevorrow's "Jurassic World," which opened with nearly $209 million, after its release on June 12.

Aside from its opening weekend and its $120.5 million opening day total, Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" still has high ratings in Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer. The space sci-fi film has 270 fresh reviews out of 286 total reviews. The film was also given an A rating by Cinema Score.

With Disney, the "Star Wars" franchise managed to achieve "legendary" levels of cash generation this weekend and effectively demonstrated the power of the force, according to Cinema Blend. In addition, the current status of Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" suggested the film's broad foundation as a start of a brand new trilogy.

"Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" is set 30 years after the events in the "Return of Jedi." The film stars Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, Max von Sydow, Simon Pegg, Oscar Isaac, and Domhnall Gleeson, among others.

Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" is now showing in theaters.
