"Castle" fans are having a slew of mixed reactions after it was announced that the once hit TV show has officially been cancelled by ABC network.

According to TV Line, ABC decided to cancel the show instead of renewing it with only Nathan Fillion as its primary character. Even though "Castle" is titled as such, the TV series has been mostly about Rick and his wife Kate Beckett (Stana Katic).

However, fans are not very pleased with the false hopes that the network and co-showrunners Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley have been giving them.

Prior to the network's announcement that "Castle" has already been cancelled, there were reports that Fillion, Jon Huertas and Seamus Dever's contracts have been renewed for another year.

This immediately led fans to think that "Castle" will be renewed for another season.

To add to this, Winter and Hawley previously spoke with TV Line about the fate of the show and said that they are hoping the series will be renewed even without Katic's Kate.

"Obviously, our hope is to come back all hands of deck for season 9, but everybody needs to make deals. There's stuff up in the air, so we are trying to leave it in a very dynamic way which leaves open the possibility that maybe the show won't come back in the same form next season - although, again, we really hope that it does," Hawley said.

On Monday night, the last episode of "Castle" season 8 will air, and the synopsis revealed that it could be a very tragic one at that.

"Crossfire" will see Rick and Kate taking on the controversial group LokSat. However, an unforeseen twist in the case would risk their lives. There are ongoing rumors that Kate will be killed off had "Castle" been renewed for another season.

Hawley and Winter said that they also filmed an alternate ending for the show just in case the series will no longer return.

"Castle" season 8, episode 21 entitled "Crossfire" will air on ABC on May 16 at 10 p.m. ET.
