Did KBS finally give in to fans' demand of a second season run for the hit Korean drama series "Descendants of the Sun"? Although the answer remains uncertain, the network did tease of a project that would give "Descendants of the Sun" fans hope.

The head of KBS' drama department, Jung Sung Ho, announced that the broadcasting company is negotiating a "Descendants of the Sun" Season 2 project that is expected to be released in 2017. This new venture is said to be the company's own way of repaying viewers for their undying support to the drama.

"KBS will strive to produce a second 'Descendants of the Sun' to meet expectations and repay viewers," Jung said, according to Soompi. "We plan to launch a 'Descendants of the Sun' project for broadcast in 2017 through negotiations with the cast and production team."

This plan, however, seems to contradict "Descendants of the Sun" writer Kim Won Sook, who previously stated that he has no plans of writing a second season.

"I've already told the story I wanted to tell. I hope that Yoo Si Jin will lead a happy life in the future without any more trouble," Kim said in a previous statement. Perhaps Kim has had a change of heart?

According to Jung, the network is still discussing whether the next story will continue the soldier theme in "Descendants of the Sun." It is still being decided if the 2017 "Descendants of the Sun" Season 2 project will still follow the lives of the same characters or if it will be a new story entirely.

If KBS were to proceed with "Descendants of the Sun" Season 2, fans are hoping that it will focus more on the love story of Seo Dae Young (Jin Goo) and Yoon Myung Joo (Kim Ji Won).

In an interview with High Cut magazine, as quoted by Soompi, Jin Goo said that he is willing to do a spin-off of "Descendants of the Sun" if the viewers would allow him to. He added that in the course of his 14-year experience in acting, he never filmed a sequel of sorts so he wants to do it for the first time.

"Descendants of the Sun" is one of the most popular and successful South Korean dramas in history. The series finale, which aired on April 14, scored a nationwide viewership rating of 38.8 percent, one of the highest ever to date.
