Robert Downey Jr. and Nic Pizzolatto may possibly team up for an HBO drama, where the "Iron Man" actor is rumored to star and the "True Detective" creator is the writer. If the HBO project materializes,  it will mark as Downey's return on the small screen after "Alley McBeal."

Details about the probable Downey-Pizzolatto project are limited, but sources say that it is Downey Jr.'s "Perry Mason" reboot. Rumors have also surfaced that the executive producers of the TV series will be composed of the actor, his wife, Susan Downey of Team Downey, Pizzolatto and Joe Horacek.

The new project is more of a TV series rather than a TV film, and it looks like that the negotiation has been happening since May, according to Variety. "Perry Mason" originally starred Raymond Burr, which aired on the CBS from 1957 to 1966.

The Downey-Pizzolatto project was supposed to be launched as a feature film by Warner Bros. as early as 2011. However, it did not happen after his film "The Judge" suffered inconsistent results at the box-office. It was then that Warner Bros. and Team Downey reportedly decided to launch it as a TV series instead.

HBO recently hinted about the project when HBO's president of programming, Casey Bloys spoke at the TCA (Television Critics Association) summer press tour about a possible "True Detective" Season 3. Bloys mentioned that they already talked with Pizzolatto about it and they both agreed, even the latter is presently working on other projects.

"We're open to someone else writing it and Nic supervising it," IGN quoted Casey Bloys as saying. "It's a really valuable franchise for us."

Fans of the actor will surely look forward to see him on the small screen as it has been quite some time when he was first seen in the "Alley McBeal" TV series. He also starred in "Saturday Night Live" in the 1980s before he found his fame as "Sherlock Holmes" and Tony Stark/ "Iron Man."

Downey Jr. will be seen next in "Spider-Man: Homecoming" which is slated to be seen in theaters on July 7, 2017. Both Downey Jr. and Pizzolatto have not yet spoken about the speculated HBO project.
