"Rings" opened big in the domestic box office last Feb. 2, Thursday, earning up to $800,000. Despite this, the film dropped during the weekend box office results and only managed to take the second spot, earning $13 million.

When the movie previewed on Thursday, it soared well over its competition. "The Space Between Us" lagged significantly behind during its preview opening, earning only $170,000 in its first day showings, Variety reported.

The studios behind "Rings" were aiming to garner a domestic weekend box office office between $10 and $12 million. Although the film only took in $13 million domestically and $28.2 million internationally, it is still above the studio's expectations.

"Rings" did lag behind the M. Night Shyamalan movie, "Split," Deadline reported. The latter managed to retain the top spot in the domestic box office for three consecutive weeks, making it the most successful Shyamalan film since "The Sixth Sense." It ended the weekend with $14 million.

"The Space Between Us" took in a much less spectacular result, earning only $3.77 million domestically over the weekend. This placed it on the ninth spot in the box office results. "A Dog's Purpose," "Hidden Figures" and "La La Land" took the third, fourth and fifth spots respectively.

Both films struggled to compete with the Super Bowl LI event, which took place this Feb. 5, Sunday. The football weekend took in a total of $98.5 million in movie ticket sales. The largest box office revenue during a Super Bowl game was in 2008, earning $128 million.

"Split" and "Rings" is also not expected to hold their current box office spots. The following weekend will see the launch of "Lego Batman," "John Wick: Chapter 2" and "Fifty Shades Darker."

"Rings" is a sequel to the 2002 horror film "The Ring" and 2005's "The Ring Two." It again features Samara Morgan as the main antagonist, this time portrayed by Bonnie Morgan. The official trailer for "Rings" can be viewed below:
