"The Sea Of Trees" starring Matthew McConaughey and Naomi Watts was booed at the Cannes International Film Festival on May 15, and the "Dallas Buyers Club" actor was quick to defend the critics.

"All right, all right, all right," McConaughey said when asked about the negative reception during a press conference on May 16, Washington Post reported. "Anyone has as much right to boo as they do to ovate."

Like "The Sea Of Trees," several Hollywood films were booed at Cannes in the past, including "Taxi Driver," Marie Antoinette" and "Pulp Fictio." In 1990, David's Lynch's "Wild At Heart" was booed but ended up winning the prestigious award Palme d'Or, according to People.

Written by Chris Sparling and directed by Gus Van Sant, "The Sea Of Trees" is about a suicidal American scientist Arthur Brennan played by McConaughey who is grieving the death of his wife Joan Brennan played by Watts.

In order to end his life, Arthur Brennan then travels to a "suicide forest" in Tokyo. There, he befriends an injured Japanese man named Takumi Nakamura played by "Godzilla" star Ken Watanabe lost in the forest near Mt. Fuji and trying to find his way out.

When Arthur Brennan helps Takumi Nakamura, he then finds the will to live.

Joining McConaughey, Watts and Nakamura in "The Sea Of Trees" cast are Ami Haruna, James Saito, Susan Garibotto, Lino Tanaka, Owen Burke, Jeffrey Corazzini, Anna Friedman, Joseph Oliviera, Katie Aselton, George J. Vezina, Jordan Gavaris,  J.T. Turner, Phyllis Gordon II, and Michael Steven Swanson among others.
