South Korea’s tech giant LG Electronics Inc. announced on Tuesday its intention to team up with China- and Japan-based companies to bring more organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display televisions in the mainstream market.

However, the world's second largest television producer opted not to disclose the prospect companies as well as the details of the partnership. Its rival Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. remains the leading TV maker in the globe.

LG Display Co. Ltd., an affiliate, is considered the sole panel maker that has the capacity to produce OLED TV panels for mass consumption. Both companies are regarded as biggest innovators in the television technology arena.

According to LG companies, OLED provides better viewing experience as it features much-improved picture quality. Also, compared with liquid crystal displays (LCD), the technology consumes less power. LCD is the current TV display technology being availed the most by consumers.

Although OLED presents high-quality features, it still costs more than LCD televisions. Analysts say that the recent rise of quantum dot technology, a more economical version of OLED, could hamper OLED TV's market take-off.

Samsung Display, another South Korea-based tech firm, also revealed that it will utilize the OLED technology in some of its consumer electronics devices such as tablets and smartphones.

However, Samsung clarified that employing such technology for televisions is still far from reality. The company stated that the recent innovation for the TV market is not yet all set for mass consumption.

Meanwhile, Sony Corp. earlier announced its plans to incorporate the OLED technology in their television production.
